Lectures & Talks

ILLUSTRATED LECTURES BY SUSANNA DE VRIES, AM, Churchill Fellow in Art History; former Lecturer in Art History, Dept of Architecture, Queensland University of Technology, Visiting Lecturer for the University of Queensland’s Continuing Education Dept and approved ADFAS Lecturer.

THESE LECTURES can be given as individual one-hour lectures as a series of three in one day with a break for refreshments in between. Each one-hour lecture contains eighty colour photographs or old engravings which can be reproduced on slides or by data projector. Course participants receive an in-depth view of the country or city visited, its architecture, history and art as well as making a visual tour around as many of the main places of interest as is possible in a one-hour talk. These talks are designed not for the specialist but for those who wish for more background knowledge before travelling there and like the authors’ books are designed to entertain as well as inform.

THE LECTURER. Recognised by a number of awards as one of Australia’s most entertaining lecturers, Susanna de Vries received a Winston Churchill Fellowship to return to Tuscany and Venice with her architect-photographer husband, Jake de Vries to photograph and document recently restored frescoes and buildings. She had studied art history in Spain and France, speaks both languages fluently and has a fascination with Mediterranean culture that appears in her book Blue Ribbons, Bitter Bread. Raised in England but of Irish heritage she lectures on these countries and on aspects of Australian history, . These lectures combine superb photography with local knowledge. ‘Susanna’s lectures are stimulating, interesting and lively,’ says Jennie Blundell, former President of Queensland’s North Coast branch of the Australian Fine and Decorative Art Society for whom Susanna lectures.
